Studio Backgammon is the circle of Saiyuki creator Kazuya Minekura (峰倉かずや) . At least four offset-printed Saiyuki doujinshi came out before the series' professional debut in G-FANTASY in late summer 1996; after that, Studio Backgammon produced at least two more Saiyuki doujinshi during the professional manga's G-FANTASY run.
Minekura-sensei's 24-page manga "pilot version" of Saiyuki was published in the November 1992 issue of COMIC GENKI. Her revised version of the concept and characters began appearing in offerings from her Studio Backgammon (probably in circle papers distributed to fans) in 1994. Studio Backgammon started producing offset-printed Saiyuki doujinshi in 1995--first as higher-quality reprints of the 1994 work and the "pilot version," and then presenting new material. Studio Backgammon also sold various designs of Saiyuki stationery from 1995 to 1997, and during that time Minekura-sensei also did sketchbook pieces for some lucky fans.
